10 Warning Signs of Mental Health Problems

Early diagnosis of mental health problems like depression can lead to prompt treatment and prevent needless suffering. Here are the Jewish Home’s top ten signs that you or someone you care about might need help.

Blue moods or unaccountable sadness (not associated with bereavement) lasting more than a week or two.
Feelings of worthlessness, inappropriate guilt, hopelessness or helplessness. Inability to control negative thoughts.

Decreased ability to think clearly, concentrate, or make decisions.
Social withdrawal and isolation, change in activity level, loss of interest in hobbies and other pleasurable pastimes. Irritability or restlessness.
Significant changes in weight or appetite.
Difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep. Sleeping more than usual, especially during the day.
A change in hygiene or standard of dress suggesting a lack of concern for appearance.
Aches, pains, and other physical problems that cannot otherwise be explained.
Increased use of alcohol; drug abuse and/or misuse.
Repeated thoughts that life is not worth living; fixations on death or suicide; suicide attempts.
